Ⅲ is one character, not three letters
Ⅲ (U+2162 ROMAN NUMERAL THREE) looks like three capital I's, but it is a single character from the Number Forms block. That has three practical effects:
- It carries a numeric value. Unicode classes Ⅲ as a "Letter Number" (category Nl) with the numeric value 3.
- It folds to letters under normalization. Its compatibility decomposition is three Latin capital I's, so NFKC turns Ⅲ into the plain text "III".
- It isn't a decimal digit. Python's
int("Ⅲ")fails even thoughunicodedata.numeric("Ⅲ")returns 3.0.
Capital vs small: Ⅲ and ⅲ
Unicode encodes a lowercase set too. ⅲ (U+2172 SMALL ROMAN NUMERAL THREE) normalizes to "iii". Use Ⅲ for chapter titles or names and ⅲ for lowercase list numbering (i, ii, iii). See ⅲ.
| Glyph | Code point | Name | NFKC result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ⅲ | U+2162 | ROMAN NUMERAL THREE | III |
| ⅲ | U+2172 | SMALL ROMAN NUMERAL THREE | iii |
| III | U+0049 ×3 | LATIN CAPITAL LETTER I | (already plain letters) |
| Ⅱ | U+2161 | ROMAN NUMERAL TWO | II |
| Ⅳ | U+2163 | ROMAN NUMERAL FOUR | IV. See Ⅳ |
Which should you use?
- Plain letters (III) are the safest when text will be searched, sorted or read by software. Every system treats them the same.
- Ⅲ keeps the numeral as one unit, so it won't break across lines between the I's. Under NFKC normalization it becomes "III" again.
Width note
Unicode gives Ⅲ the East Asian Width value "Ambiguous". It can be shown narrow in Western text and wide in Chinese, Japanese or Korean contexts, so its width may change between apps.
Typing Ⅲ
- Word for Windows: type
2162, then Alt + X. - Mac: Unicode Hex Input, hold Option and type
