When to use ②

How to copy and paste

Tap the large glyph or the Copy button to put ② on your clipboard, then paste with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. Open the parent Math & Numbers page for more related characters, or the guide for PNG download tips.

What makes ② different from a plain 2

② is a single character, U+2461 CIRCLED DIGIT TWO, not a "2" with a circle drawn around it by a font. Because the circle is part of the character, it stays wherever plain text goes: a bio, a spreadsheet cell, a file name, a chat message.

Unicode also records that ② is a "circled" form of the digit 2 (its compatibility decomposition is <circle> 0032). That has a practical side effect. Any software that applies Unicode compatibility normalization (NFKC) turns ② back into a plain "2", so step② and step2 become the same text. If you need the circle to survive a sign-up form or a search index, test it there first.

Ways to use ②

 • Numbered steps and callouts: instructions, recipe cards and slides, where ① ② ③ stand out from the body text.
 • Diagrams and maps: a small ② beside a part or a location keeps labels short.
 • Lists in plain-text places that don't support real numbered lists, like social bios or chat messages.

Look-alikes and how to tell them apart

GlyphCode pointNameDifference
②U+2461CIRCLED DIGIT TWOOutline circle
❷U+2777DINGBAT NEGATIVE CIRCLED DIGIT TWOFilled ("negative") circle. See ❷
➁U+2781DINGBAT CIRCLED SANS-SERIF DIGIT TWOOutline circle, sans-serif digit
⓶U+24F6DOUBLE CIRCLED DIGIT TWOTwo rings; added in Unicode 3.2
⑵U+2475PARENTHESIZED DIGIT TWO(2) in one character, no circle
⒉U+2489DIGIT TWO FULL STOP"2." in one character

Under NFKC, ② becomes "2", ⑵ becomes "(2)" and ⒉ becomes "2.". The dingbat and double-circled versions have no compatibility mapping, so they stay as they are.

Width and rendering

Unicode gives ② the East Asian Width value "Ambiguous". That means it can be displayed narrow (letter-width) in Western text and wide (full-width) in Chinese, Japanese or Korean contexts. So the same ② can take up different amounts of space depending on the app and font. If a row of ①②③ looks uneven, keep them all in the same font.

② is also not a digit to software. Its Unicode category is "Other Number" (No), not "Decimal Number", so a program that parses digits, such as Python's int("②"), rejects it.

Typing ② without copy-paste

 • Microsoft Word for Windows: type 2461, then press Alt + X.
 • Mac: add the Unicode Hex Input input source, switch to it, hold Option and type 2461.
 • HTML: ② (also in the codes table above).
