๐ (U+1F408) is named simply CAT, while ๐ฑ (U+1F431) is CAT FACE: the whole animal vs just the head. Both arrived in Unicode 6.0 and both display as emoji by default. Use ๐ when you mean a cat itself (your pet, a cat walking by) and ๐ฑ for a cute "kitty" reaction.

Black cat is three characters
๐โโฌ is built from ๐, an invisible zero-width joiner (U+200D) and โฌ U+2B1B BLACK LARGE SQUARE. It became a recommended emoji in Emoji 13.0. A device that supports the sequence shows one black cat. One that doesn't shows the parts, ๐ and โฌ, side by side as separate emoji, which is the fallback Unicode's emoji standard (UTS #51) specifies. Nothing is broken; the receiver's device just doesn't support the sequence.
