Symbol Not Showing? Fix Boxes and Tofu Characters
A □ or empty rectangle means the app cannot draw that code point — not that copy failed. This checklist gets you from tofu back to a visible glyph.
What “tofu” (□) actually means
Unicode tofu is a missing-glyph placeholder. The character is still in the string — select and copy may still work — but the current font has no drawing for that code point. Color emoji can also fail on old OS versions while ♥ still renders.
Confirm you copied the intended character by pasting into this site’s search or opening a known detail page such as ♥.
Fix checklist
- Try another glyph in the same family — e.g. swap a rare heart for ♥ from hearts.
- Change the font in Docs/Photoshop to Noto Sans Symbols, Segoe UI Symbol, or Apple Symbols.
- Update the app / OS — emoji fonts ship with system updates.
- Avoid in-app browsers when copying; use Safari/Chrome — see mobile copy guide.
- Drop Mathematical Alphanumeric “fonts” if the platform normalizes them; use fancy text fullwidth/circled or plain décor.

Why do I see a box instead of a symbol?
